GLOBAL WARMING:
BEAUTIFUL

INTRODUCTION

What impact will global warming have on our use of beauty products and wellness practices? How will future consumers react to a hotter, more humid world and will this lead to changes in their skincare routines?

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to human activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that global temperatures have already risen by approximately 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels, with significant impacts on weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems (IPCC, 2021).

Historically, climate has played a crucial role in shaping beauty and wellness practices. For instance, ancient civilizations developed various skincare routines and beauty products tailored to their specific environmental conditions. In Egypt, the hot and dry climate led to the creation of moisturizing creams and protective makeup. Similarly, in colder climates, such as in Northern Europe, the focus was on products that could protect the skin from harsh winds and cold (Peiss, 2011).

a new study by UC Berkeley concludes that the heat index — essentially how hot it really feels — has increased much faster than has the measured temperature: about 3X faster.

As the heating of our planet hits it’s hockeystick curve, FUTURESTANDARD is testing ventures in the luxury
beauty and wellness space to understand what will drive the global consumer of tomorrow in their choices
of product, business model and aspirations.
